Academic freedom: the Central European University (CEU)

30 March 2017

One of the top universities in central and eastern Europe, the Central European University (CEU), may be forced out of Hungary under a draft law being prepared by the Hungarian government.

This bill would seriously inhibit the continuing existence of the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, and represents escalation of the Hungarian government’s pressure against the institutional champions of liberal democratic inquiry.

The CEU is a major center of higher learning and intellectual openness in Europe, and is Hungary's most distinguished social science university by many standards.  Hence, an attack on the core activity of the CEU and Hungarian higher learning is an attack on independent social science research everywhere in Europe and the world.

The Social Science Research Institute of the University of Amsterdam condemns such an attack and shall look for ways to safeguard independent social-science research and academic freedom in Hungary and Europe generally.

We call upon European decision-makers to actively stand up against political interference with academic independence, and to actively support such independence and freedom, fundamental building blocks of European peace, stability, justice and wellbeing.
